CONCEPT
Sisters in Cinema’s 2025 Sister Screening Series will focus on “The Black Women’s Film Canon,” a collection of essential and culturally significant films by Black women directors, co-curated by Sisters in Cinema staff, notable Black women directors, film scholars, and our community. As the industry’s landscape continues to shift in the present moment, there’s more power than ever in understanding the films that brought us to this moment and the new ones ushering us into the future. This series is an opportunity for artists and audiences alike to appreciate the breadth of artistry that generations of Black women filmmakers have brought to the movies and to our lives.
PROCESS
Beginning in November 2024, Sisters in Cinema’s community of filmmakers, critics, cinema lovers, and the film-curious will participate in audience and scholar polling that will help us build a list of films they consider part of the Black Women’s Film Canon. Once collected and analyzed, our core team will come together to select four-five films to screen between February - May 2025. The remaining list will once again be shared publicly, allowing the community to select the remaining list of films that will screen as part of the remainder of our year-long series.
DETAILS
Film scholar and TCM host Jacqueline Stewart will host the series, providing an introduction to be played before every screening. In conjunction with the screening series, Sisters in Cinema will launch a limited podcast hosted by Stewart interviewing both filmmakers and film scholars discussing the film selected for the canon for further conversation and analysis. Sisters in Cinema will screen the series of films across 2025 in the Media Arts Center and select partner theaters across Chicago, including the Musuem of Contemporary Art.
